صرف لغت میں پھیر کو کہتے ہیں لیکن قواعد کی رو سے یہ اس علم کا نام ہے جس میں الفاظ کے تغیر و تبدل کا ذکر ہوتا ہے۔اور ان سے مختلف کلمات بنانے پہ بحث کی جاتی ہے۔اس علم کے جاننے کا فاعدہ یہ ہے کہ انسان صحیح الفاظ بول سکتا ہے۔اسکا موضوع لفظ ہے۔

انسان کے منہ سے بولتے ہوئے جو کچھ نکلتا ہے اسے لفظ کہتے ہیں۔
لفظ کی دو قسمیں ہیں ، کلمو اور مہمل۔
کلمہ۔
ایسے لفظ کو کہتے ہیں جسکا کچھ نہ کچھ مطلب سننے والے کی سمجھ میں آ جائے۔ جیسے روٹی، پانی وغیرہ۔
مہمل
وہ لفظ جسکے سننے سے کوئی معنی سمجھ میں نہ آئے جیسے ووٹی، وانی وغیرہ۔
